Transformation Tuesday: What to do with old bridesmaid dresses?

Here’s a photo of me in my bridesmaid dress from my cousin’s wedding in 2011.  She was married over six years ago and I’ve carted this dress from Minnesota to Illinois to Georgia to Utah on all of our cross country moves and I have yet to wear it again.  So how long do you keep those dresses?  And what do you do with them when you are done?  I decided I’d try to refashion it.

I’m fairly certain this post could very easily be in flop friday because I’m not loving the outcome of this experiment.

I ripped apart the dress and laid this pencil skirt pattern on it and went for it.

My first fitting of the skirt revealed revelations that no woman enjoys.  Although, I made size 14, which generally fits me, in Simplicity patterns, my lower butt cheeks were not fitting in this skirt.  I really didn’t think I could let the skirt out enough to accommodate them so I thought I’d go rogue from the pattern and see if I could creatively solve the lower cheek situation.  Here is the result . . .

I think the quote from my 10 year old son sums up this experiment, “Why does it look like it’s coming out of your butt?”  Sigh . . .  out of the mouths of babes.  Yes, I look like I’m pooing that pretty fabric.  There’s simply nothing fashion forward or sexy about that.  I’ve contemplated trying to rework things again but at the end of the day I think I’m ready to concede defeat and spend my time on more likely victories.  Onward my friends!

Transformation Tuesday: Reimagine the brown skirt

I love the idea of reimagining things.  One of my favorite bloggers spent a year buying things at thrift stores and reimagining the clothes into something else.  I love the challenge and I thought no better place to look then your own wardrobe.  I’ve had this skirt so long I don’t remember where I bought it or how much I spent on it but one thing is for sure I don’t wear anymore.  So instead of throwing it in the charity bin, I gave the reimagine a try.

So here is the before . . .

Here is the during . . .

I shortened it and took the extra and made a casing for the skirt to give the top stability.

And the after . . .

I thought this was so fun.  I can’t wait to try again.  I’ve got two projects in the works.  Reimagining this white skirt and reimagining this bridesmaid dress.  Check back to see if they end up on Transformation Tuesday or Flop Friday.
