The Sewing Room Evolution

I moved into this sewing room 7 years ago. While I liked a lot about the space, I immediately started to not like it. It was just too dark. As soon as my husband heard I wasn’t enjoying it, he hired electricians to put in can lights and it was instantly a better experience.

Originally, I had a hodge podge of furniture.

My husband and I were walking around a local furniture store and I saw this countertop height dining table with storage on one side. I asked my husband what he thought of me buying it as my sewing table and then he said the sexiest thing ever, “Why don’t you buy two?!” That’s what brought the sewing room to looking like this.

I recently started dabbling in wood working and then inspiration hit. What if I build built-ins across the back of the sewing room to hold all of the necessities of the hobby? Could I do it?

I spent a bunch of time measuring and planning it out. Eventually I taped up my vision on the wall and then tried to imagine what it would look like and if I would like the finished product.

I ordered the unfinished cabinets from Home Depot demoed the baseboards and chair rail, and had an electrician move the outlets.

Little by little the vision started coming to life.

It was a massive amount of work but by this point I knew I was going to love it. It wasn’t over yet, painting and hardware were still left to do.

Isn’t she lovely? Now to dress her up with hardware.

I love it, more than words can say. I’m back to sewing and it’s a privilege to work in such a lovely space. The storage and organization that the built-ins provide is game changing.

Some finishing touches, my grandma’s Redwing dinner plates, my aunts antique scissors, the antique thread display and a few other antique store finds that spoke to my soul.
