I saw a picture of the Otis overalls shortly after they released and was obsessed with the back of them. I was working on my associates degree and pretty overwhelmed by school and my regular obligations so I just took a screen shot of the overalls and there it sat in the depths of my phone until a couple of weeks ago.

I bought this denim with an unusual inside of the fabric at the Fabrictopia in San Antonio, Texas and as soon as I saw the fabric I knew it was perfect for the Otis overalls.

I finally bought the pattern once I had the perfect fabric in mind.
I wish I’d realized or even bothered to search up tutorials before I started the project. It went fine but I was a little confused about the back tie and came to find that Sew Liberated has an entire Sew-a-long on their Youtube page. If you are interested or wanting to make this pattern you can easily follow along with the whole process.
I’ve had a couple of people ask me the difference between these and the Burnside Bibs by Sew House 7. This fit isn’t even comparable. The Burnside bibs will cinch in way more and give a slimmer silhouette compared to the more flowing and boxy silhouette of the Otis. The Burnside bibs have simple finishes and is relatively easy to sew up. The Otis pattern makers have included some more complex and higher lever finishes to the interior of the garment. None of them are necessary but if you follow them you will have a beautiful garment both inside and out. I had to omit some of them because using denim made it too thick for French seams in a couple of places. I think if you are using chambray or linen it’s probably a better fit.

The pattern is drafted for a 5’6″ or 5’5″ person. I messaged the pattern maker and asked what they would recommend for a 5’9″ person. The cuffs at the bottom of the garment mean that no length can be added there and I was concerned about where they would land on a taller person. She recommended two inches in length to the legs and one in the shoulder straps. That’s what I did and I am happy with the results.
